It seems that 2020 has not gone as planned for many families and businesses across the world. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the United States in March, nearly 17 million Americans have filed for unemployment. With stay-at-home orders in place in nearly every state, businesses are experiencing an unprecedented slow of traction in nearly every market. These never before seen circumstances beg the question: How do businesses survive, and even thrive, in the midst of this?

How is your business shifting during the Coronavirus pandemic? Teslar, a banking software company based out of Northwest Arkansas, has seen their audience dramatically decrease. Because they are a sales-based company, finding clients that are willing to invest in a new product is quite the challenge. Instead of working on finding new sales, Teslar has shifted their focus. “Not only are we trying to establish new business, we are just trying to establish a foundation and stepping stones for current clients, so that they have everything they need to support their customers.” Teslar has used this time to build better relationships with clients they already serve. They have created new modules to serve their clients, like one that helps customers upload documents securely since they cannot meet in person. They have even reached out to see if their clients need any assistance navigating software from home. Teslar is building a quality name for themselves by serving clients instead of sales in the midst of chaos.

There are many other ways a business can be using this time to grow and develop, instead of focusing on the unknown. Here are a few key ideas that will help you keep a growth mindset:

  1. Fine Tune & Refresh – What can you be doing better? Are there areas of your business that meet expectations, but don’t exceed them? Find ways to change that while you have “down-time.” This may be a refresh on your branding, a more user-friendly website, or revisiting previously set goals and improving them.
  2. Review your Online Presence – Check in to see how you are doing with social media and engagement. Are more people visiting your pages because they, too, are at home? Make a plan for how you can reach those visitors.
  3. Testing, Testing – Yep. Tests. Not only yourself, but also your business. Skillshare, find new tasks you can learn about that will help you in the long run, and take a look back to make sure there aren’t steps you have slowly started to skip that could ensure a quality service or product. Test your brand, as well. That new slogan or product you’re thinking about launching? Try it now, when people have time to honestly review it.

Although this time is scary for many, do not allow yourself or your business to fall into the abyss. “This is a time that businesses can either drown or thrive. You really just have to tactfully leverage this crisis and figure out how you’re going to build your business based on it. Hopefully, set yourself up for a successful future.”
